The Origins of Mānuka Honey

Where Did Mānuka Honey Come From?

In the era of New Zealand when the Māori were the only population, the Mānuka tree was a prominent presence along the coastal regions. Although technically classified as a tree, Mānuka is commonly seen as a shrub and holds deep significance and utility for the indigenous Māori community. This versatile tree served as a vital resource for crafting various items, including paddles, weapons, spade blades, bird spears, and mauls used in building construction.

Beyond its practical applications, the Mānuka bark played a crucial role in traditional medicine. Māori would use the bark as a sedative, boil it with leaves to inhale the resulting vapour for cold relief, and apply the ash onto the skin to treat specific skin conditions. Remarkably, these ancient practices of Rongoa Māori, or traditional healing, continue to thrive even today, preserving the cultural and practical importance of the Mānuka tree.

How Did Mānuka Honey Grow Into A Premium Product? In 1839, the honey bee made its debut in New Zealand, courtesy of the Methodist missionary, Mary Brumby. Upon her arrival in Hokianga, Brumby brought two hives to the country, marking the official introduction of honey bees to New Zealand. While some bee species existed in the country before this, they were not suitable for honey production.

As the honey bee found a fruitful haven in the New Zealand bush, beekeepers began to emerge, and the Māori population was quick to embrace the trade, becoming the country's first commercial beekeepers. The beekeeping industry flourished in the early 20th century, with approximately 100,000 hives by 1929. Post-World War II, the number of beekeepers soared even higher, reaching around 7,000 with over 150,000 hives in 1950.

However, the true turning point came with the discovery of different honey variations – and one, in particular, took centre stage. Stay tuned to unveil the captivating story of how the Mānuka flower became an integral force in the creation of one of the world's most renowned honey varieties.

Is There Scientific Backing For Raw Mānuka Honey Being Unique?

Say no more. Dr Peter Molan was the first to discover Mānuka honey’s unique properties back in 1981. What exactly did this include? Molan had observed suggested antibacterial activity from the monofloral Mānuka honey, which wasn’t totally unexpected as there had been reports of this activity in other varieties. However, unlike the typical kinds of honey, raw Mānuka honey was showing “non-peroxide” activity or NPA. Most honey that showed an antibacterial component was usually from peroxide (HPA). So, to see NPA present over HPA.

Since this initial discovery, there have been several studies to indicate a positive relationship between Mānuka honey and potential antibacterial activity. A 2005 dermatological investigation looked at the potential for treating leg ulcers with monofloral Mānuka honey. The results were gathered over a four-week period and saw some very interesting conclusions made. Firstly, the mean size of the ulcer was reduced from 5.62cm squared to 2.25cm squared.

The unpleasant odour was eliminated and the pain was reduced. The researchers concluded that there was a positive relationship between the wound-healing outcome. However, there was no significant improvement in the arterial (deep) wounds, only the superficial wounds showed a connection. While major or severe damage to the skin seems to be ineffective by Mānuka honey, it’s exciting to see minor cuts and abrasions potentially see improved healing from Mānuka honey.
